In addition to the chronic labour shortage our Region has been facing, we are also seeing a rapidly aging population when compared to other regions and the province as a whole. As well as having a highly aging population we noted that the participation rate of our more experienced cohorts is lower than other regions and the provincial average. This report will examine how we may encourage older cohorts (45-54, 55-64, 65+) to participate in the labour force. The report examined the sectors and occupations most affected by an aging workforce through interviews with local employers, and with individuals approaching retirement or recently retired to explore the factors that are affecting participation in the labour market.
